Ever wondered how to get your puppy or dog to give you their paw on command?  Training your dog to do this could not be easier and I will show you how.

Before you begin any training of any sort you must cover good means good training with your dog.

  • Firstly hold a tasty treat (something smelly like hot dog) in a fist.
  • Hold the hand behind your back and present it to the dog.
  • Your dog will lick at your hand initially but keep a tight grip on that treat.
  • It may take a few minutes but your puppy will quickly try to use its paw to get at the treat.
  • The instant your pup lifts its paw say ‘good’.
  • Don’t give it the treat in that hand but feed it another from your other hand.
  • Repeat until your pup is putting its paw on your hand, saying ‘good’ every time it gets closer.
  • Think of it as a game of hot and cold ie. your pup lifts its paw a little – good/treat, the next time you are looking for a higher raise before you tell it ‘good’ and so on until the paw is on your hand.
  • Now start giving the ‘high five’ or ‘paw’ command, followed by good.
  • So the sequence is – paw hits hand, ‘paw’, ‘good’, treat.
  • Repeat this for a few days and then remove the treat in your fist and repeat all of the above.

It really is that simple!  Ask for the trick before meal times and walks to really make your dog work for its rewards, it will enjoy it! Good Luck.

Thanks! I’ve been trying to teach my pup to “shake” – i think this will help!

Its a nice little trick. Going to put up ‘play dead’ soon, although it is a little more complicated.

Hi, I taught my pup how to shake. She puts her paw in my palm all the time. The trouble is, she will put her mouth in my hand too, and start biting my hand. How do I correct this? Maybe cause she is still teething? She’s 5 months old now.

Yes you are right, she will still be teething but you can still fix the problem. When she mouths your hand tell her firmly no and do not reward her when she does this. Make it really quick so as soon as the paw touches your hand, remove it (your hand – behind your back) praise treat, do not give her opportunity to mouth, so just the paw becomes the behaviour. If you are not quick enough sometimes and she mouths you withhold the treat. This is a punishment in itself known as negative reinforcement (taking something good away). There is another option should this not be effective enough for you but try this and get back to me. :)

Another way I taught my yellow Labrador Ella how to hi five is, make sure that your dog knows how to shake before attempting this trick….. As you are you shaking with your dog, slowly raise your hand after each shake. Then when you have your dog at the height you would like it to hi five at, change your hand into a hi five position, not a shake position. Make sure that when you have your hand in a hi five position that you say “hi five”…… Hope this helps :D
