I feel pet insurance is a personal preference call. Really you have to ask yourself what you are willing to pay in the worst possible situation. Its true you may have a perfectly healthy dog with no complaints and you have paid a monthly period but is equally true you will be one of the people caught short and in an awful situation, having to make decisions you just don’t want to make.
When your dog gets older it is guaranteed to need medical care. It is vary rare for an older dog not to have joint, skin, heart and many other conditions that can be extremely expensive. The same goes for puppies, especially if you made the mistake of getting your pet from a puppy mill or back yard breeder. These puppy’s are often riddled with disease and you don’t get told of any hereditary eye or hip conditions.
What is pet insurance?
It covers most of the costs of any medical bills you may incur throughout the life of your pet due to accidents or ill health.
What is the risk of not having it?
Pet medical costs can spiral out of control. Statistics show that one in three pets who visit the vet’s need treatment; putting your dog at a 33% chance of needing funding. This means that it is a personal call. You really need to ask yourself can you cover potentially thousands of pounds / dollars for medical treatment. Some conditions like diabetes mean a lifetime of cost and once your dog has be diagnosed it will be too late to get insurance.
The Cost of Pet Insurance
You need to shop around for good insurance and read the small print. Check out comparison sites and find something right for you. Although it will be monthly cost to you, it may be worth it, especially with puppies as one of the most common ailments is a foreign body ingestion (small intestine) costing around $1,629 to cure. We all know puppies like to eat up everything that is around so this is a real risk.

I have insurance for my dog and I’m so glad I got it. A lot of people think it’s not worth it but they don’t understand that it’s insurance like any other insurance, where you have it in case of accidents. I know I couldn’t afford a $2000 bill if one came up.
I’m so glad I had pet insurance when i dog trod on something which made her paw swell up and she couldn’t walk. Still don’t know what caused it even after the vet operated to check to see if there was anything inside.
My pet insurance policy meant that the vets bills were covered so I only had to worry about looking my dog.
I would advise anyone with a dog to shop around to find the right policy for their pet. Online quotes (http://www.healthy-pets.co.uk) mean it doesn’t take long to get a quote and you are able to easily compare.
