How To Stop My Puppy Chewing 14/06/09
Chewing can be a nightmare so you need to nip it in the bud quickly. This article will show you how.
Your beautiful wooden dining table and chairs chewed? Your favourite slippers, a missing shoe! Now the puppy has even started on the skirting board! I remember when my pup Sophie began chewing like there was no tomorrow. My previous puppy was great with a bitter lemon spray but not Sophie she needed an alternative. Read on to find the top stop chewing tips.
- Spray all your chewable furniture in bitter lemon or apple spray (available from all good pet shops).
- Make sure your puppy has tons of chews to devour
- Fill a kong (rubber toy) with its food and seal with peanut butter or cream cheese (this will keep them going for a while).
- Soak a cloth in gravy, then you can freeze it. Monitor your dog when they have this to make sure they don’t eat the cloth! This will not only give them something tastier to chew on it will also help them numb their gums.
- Give them some ice to eat or in their water bowl, again this will numb the area.
- Tire your puppy out before leaving him alone so he will be too tired to chew!

Thanks for the great article, very helpful!
The one that worked the best for me was filling one of his toys with food and peanut butter.
I’d like to try the spray though because the toy takes a bit of time to prepare and can get a bit messy, especially if I’m in a rush to go out.
Would the spray damage my furniture or anything?
Thanks in advance!
P.S I’ve found your other articles really worth reading! Keep it up!
No, the sprays are designed to be safe to use on most furniture. However, you should always check the individual product to make sure. If you want to be safe then split a lemon and rub it on the surfaces and it will have a similar effect although may not last as long.
